Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (Cefas)
Cefas, as an executive agency of Defra, works alongside government and others in the UK and internationally to play a vital role in securing healthy marine and freshwater environments. With its 500 staff, extensive laboratories and sea-going capabilities Cefas provides evidence-based advice, conducts world-class research, manages related data and information, and facilitates collaboration through wide-ranging international relationships.
Drawing on a diverse skill and technology base, Cefas tackles wide-ranging issues linked to all aspects of marine, coastal and freshwater environments. Example applications include managing marine environments, ensuring sustainable use of fish stocks, protecting society from the effects of aquatic contaminants and fish diseases, and promoting adaptation to the impacts of climate change.
Cefas’ internationally renowned experts have a growing track record of successfully exploiting their science and technology, with approximately one-third of its income being commercially won.

Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl)
Dstl is the centre of scientific excellence for the UK Ministry of Defence, housing one of the largest groups of scientists and engineers in public service. It is based at several sites in southern UK and its principal site is at Porton Down. The Laboratory's talented and creative scientists deliver defence research, specialist technical services and have the ability to track global technological developments to ensure that the UK Armed Forces and Government are supported by world class scientific and technical advice. Dstl's intellectual property is commercialised in civil markets by a wholly owned company called Ploughshare Innovations Limited.

The Food and Environment Research Agency
Fera provides robust evidence, rigorous analysis and expert professional advice to government, international organisations and the private sector, in order to support and develop a sustainable and secure food chain, a healthy natural environment, and to protect the global community from biological and chemical risks.

Health Protection Agency (HPA)
The HPA is a non-departmental public body that exists to help protect the health of everyone in the UK. It achieves this by reducing the dangers to health from infections, chemical and radiation hazards. With a large network of approximately 3500 staff, the agency also provides support to, and works in partnership with others who also have health protection responsibilities.

The agency provides a wide range of specialist services including contract research, process development, manufacture and consultancy to both private and public sector customers. The agency also actively exploits its intellectual property portfolio through licensing and spinouts.

Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL)
HSL is the in-house laboratory of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and provides a range of services to help deliver the Government’s strategy for improving health and safety in Great Britain. The Laboratory’s scientific services are used by both Government and industry to meet their objectives by bringing business, workers and the national economy the benefits of well-managed, sensible, health and safety processes.
Using its comprehensive skills base and range of test facilities, HSL addresses the array of health and safety issues that arise in the workplace. It uses experience and know-how to identify the problems, undertake research and then propose solutions that work.
HSL have a diverse range of scientific, engineering and technical specialists and health professionals to draw on – covering fire, explosion and process safety, occupational health and environmental sciences, safety engineering and human factors. This wide-ranging expertise is underpinned by an international reputation as one of the world’s premier health and safety laboratories.

Veterinary Laboratories Agency (VLA)
VLA is an Executive Agency of Defra and is a regional network of 16 laboratories including one in Scotland, two in Wales, a central research and diagnostic testing facility near Weybridge in Surrey and two joint surveillance centres at the Liverpool and London veterinary schools. The Agency is one of the largest research establishments of its kind in the world and is internationally recognised as a centre of scientific excellence. It has close international links with research institutes, universities and commercial companies and acts as an International Reference Laboratory for a wide range of infectious and noninfectious diseases in farm animals. The aim of the Agency is to safeguard public and animal health through world class veterinary research and surveillance of farmed livestock.
